Ensuite Bathroom Guide: Minimum Sizes, Layouts, Door Options, Ventilation, Privacy, Waterproofing, Fittings, Noise, Costs Per Square Foot and Common Mistakes in Pakistan

An ensuite bathroom is a bathroom attached to a bedroom, usually the main bedroom, and planning it well means balancing size, privacy, ventilation and cost. This page covers minimum sizes, layouts, door options, ventilation, privacy, waterproofing, fittings, noise, costs and common mistakes in Pakistan. For related pages see small bathroom design, bathroom reconstruction and WC washrooms.

Minimum sizes

A basic ensuite with a toilet, basin and shower needs about 1.5 by 2.1 metres (5 by 7 feet), and a comfortable one is 2 by 2.5 metres or more. A bath needs at least 2.4 by 2.4 metres. Plan clearances at each fixture.

Layouts

  • Linear. Fixtures along one wall, simple and economical.
  • L-shaped. Shower in a corner, vanity and toilet on the sides.
  • Wet room. Whole floor waterproof with a drain, open and easy to clean.
  • Walk-through. The bathroom lies between the bedroom and a dressing area.

Doors and privacy

Use a hinged, sliding or pocket door, and position it so the toilet is not seen from the bed. Add a lockable latch and consider a short entrance lobby. Soundproofing the wall and door helps.

Ventilation

An ensuite must vent outside, not into the bedroom, so use an exhaust fan or window and keep the door closed during showers. See bathroom fans. Damp air in a bedroom causes mould in wardrobes.

Waterproofing and floor

Waterproof the floor and walls to at least 2 metres in showers, slope the floor to the drain and use non-slip tiles. A small step or threshold stops water escaping into the bedroom.

Indicative costs

These ranges show common figures for a small ensuite.

ItemIndicative range
Fit-out per sq ftPKR 2,500 - 6,000
Commode and basin setPKR 20,000 - 40,000
Shower set and glass screenPKR 25,000 - 100,000
Tiles with labour, per sq ftPKR 150 - 700
Plumber and electricianPKR 20,000 - 60,000

Prices move with brand, model, size and stock. Use these ranges to judge a quote, then compare the exact model and what is included.

Noise and plumbing

Place the bathroom on a shared wall with services, use sound insulation around the cistern and choose quiet fill valves. Noise at night is a real complaint. Fixed plumbing should be done by a licensed plumber.

What to check before buying

  • Layout. Clearances and door swing
  • Ventilation. Fan to outside
  • Waterproofing. Floor and shower
  • Lighting. Soft, night-friendly

Common mistakes

Venting into the bedroom, a door facing the bed, a shower that sprays out and a floor with no slope are the usual faults. Mock up the layout with tape before building.

Before you decide

Fix the size and layout, plan ventilation and door position and waterproof properly. A well planned ensuite adds comfort and value to a home. Ask the builder for a drawing that shows pipe routes, drain points and fan position, keep it with the house papers, and test every tap and the shower drain before the tiles are grouted so any fault is fixed while the wall is still open.
