The Three Layers of Light
Good rooms use three layers: ambient (overall fill — ceiling lights), task (focused — reading, kitchen counters), and accent/feature (drama — a chandelier or wall lights). Most rooms want at least two of the three. Deciding by layer, not by fixture, makes the choice obvious.
Ceiling Lights — The Workhorse
Recessed spots and flush ceiling fittings give even, glare-free ambient and task light. They disappear into a false ceiling and suit every room. Start here, then add feature lighting.
Wall Lights — Mood & Accent
Wall lights add warmth at eye level and free up ceiling and floor space — great beside beds, along hallways and either side of a feature wall or mirror. They're the easiest way to add a soft, layered glow.
Chandeliers — The Statement

Plan Lighting With the Ceiling
Whichever fixtures you choose, plan the wiring before the false ceiling closes up. Coordinating the ceiling design and the lighting layout is what gives that clean, built-in look — see our ceiling + lighting ideas.
