MDF stands for Medium Density Fibreboard — wood fibres combined with resin and pressed under heat into a dense, uniform sheet. Unlike plywood, MDF has no grain and no layers, which is exactly why it's the preferred base for anything that needs a perfectly smooth, paintable or laminate-ready surface: kitchen cabinet doors, wardrobe shutters, false-ceiling panelling and furniture. The Two Grades You'll Actually Choose Between
- Standard MDF — the default grade for dry, indoor use: furniture, wardrobes, indoor panelling and ceiling work.
- MR (Moisture-Resistant) MDF — treated to resist dampness, used near humidity: kitchens, bathroom cabinetry, and humid coastal cities like Karachi. It has a recognisable green core.
Common Sizes and Thicknesses in Pakistan
The standard MDF sheet size is 8×4 ft (2440 × 1220 mm), also available in 9×4 ft. Thicknesses commonly range from 6mm to 25mm — thinner sheets (under 6mm) for panelling and lamination backing, thicker sheets (12mm+) for cabinet carcasses, shelves and doors. 18mm is the workhorse thickness for most furniture.

MDF vs Plywood vs Particle Board — Quick Answer
MDF gives the smoothest, most uniform finish and takes paint and laminate best. Plywood is stronger and more moisture-tolerant in raw form but shows grain and layer lines. Particle board is the cheapest but least durable — avoid it for anything load-bearing or long-term. For decorative faces, pair MDF with our lamination sheets; for fully wet walls, consider PVC sheets instead.
