Gypsum False Ceiling — The Designer's Choice
Gypsum board is fixed to a metal frame and then jointed and finished, giving a fully smooth, paint-ready surface. Because it can be built up and shaped, it's the only option for elaborate designs — multi-level trays, curved profiles and cove channels that hide LED strips for indirect lighting. That flexibility is why interior designers default to gypsum for living rooms, dining rooms, entrances and any space where the ceiling is meant to be part of the design.
Best rooms: lounges, formal dining, master bedrooms, receptions. Budget tier: mid-to-premium — you're paying for framing, boards, jointing compound and a skilled finish. Maintenance: it takes paint, so it's easy to refresh, but it's not moisture-friendly — a roof or pipe leak will stain or sag the board and mean a patch-and-repaint. In Pakistan's climate: gypsum is fine in dry living areas, but keep it out of unventilated bathrooms and away from damp-prone walls; heat and dust don't bother it, standing moisture does. Install time: slower — a typical room takes several days once you allow for framing, boarding, jointing, drying and painting, and cove/tray designs add more.
PVC Ceiling — Fast, Waterproof, Affordable
PVC ceiling panels are lightweight planks that clip onto a light frame and interlock, so a ceiling goes up quickly with almost no mess. They're 100% waterproof, wipe clean with a damp cloth, and won't sag, stain or grow mould in humidity — a genuine advantage in Pakistani kitchens, bathrooms and covered outdoor areas. They come in wood-look, marble, matte and glossy finishes, and cost less than gypsum both in material and labour.
Best rooms: kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, utility areas and whole-home budget projects. Budget tier: the most affordable false ceiling. Maintenance: the easiest — no repainting, just wipe; a damaged plank can be swapped out individually. In Pakistan's climate: the standout choice for humidity and wet areas, and it shrugs off heat and dust. Install time: fast — a standard room is usually done in a day, with no drying or painting wait. The trade-off is design flexibility: PVC suits flat and simple stepped ceilings, not the sculpted trays and curves gypsum can achieve.
