Gypsum Ceiling vs PVC Ceiling: Which Should You Choose?

📖 6 min read🔄 Updated July 2026✅ Prices checked vs live rates

A false ceiling is one of the highest-impact upgrades for a Pakistani home — but the first decision is the material: gypsum or PVC. They cost differently, look different and suit different rooms. Here's how to choose. See the full ceiling range and price guide as you read.

Gypsum False Ceiling — The Designer's Choice

Gypsum board is fixed to a metal frame and then jointed and finished, giving a fully smooth, paint-ready surface. Because it can be built up and shaped, it's the only option for elaborate designs — multi-level trays, curved profiles and cove channels that hide LED strips for indirect lighting. That flexibility is why interior designers default to gypsum for living rooms, dining rooms, entrances and any space where the ceiling is meant to be part of the design.

Best rooms: lounges, formal dining, master bedrooms, receptions. Budget tier: mid-to-premium — you're paying for framing, boards, jointing compound and a skilled finish. Maintenance: it takes paint, so it's easy to refresh, but it's not moisture-friendly — a roof or pipe leak will stain or sag the board and mean a patch-and-repaint. In Pakistan's climate: gypsum is fine in dry living areas, but keep it out of unventilated bathrooms and away from damp-prone walls; heat and dust don't bother it, standing moisture does. Install time: slower — a typical room takes several days once you allow for framing, boarding, jointing, drying and painting, and cove/tray designs add more.

PVC Ceiling — Fast, Waterproof, Affordable

PVC ceiling panels are lightweight planks that clip onto a light frame and interlock, so a ceiling goes up quickly with almost no mess. They're 100% waterproof, wipe clean with a damp cloth, and won't sag, stain or grow mould in humidity — a genuine advantage in Pakistani kitchens, bathrooms and covered outdoor areas. They come in wood-look, marble, matte and glossy finishes, and cost less than gypsum both in material and labour.

Best rooms: kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, utility areas and whole-home budget projects. Budget tier: the most affordable false ceiling. Maintenance: the easiest — no repainting, just wipe; a damaged plank can be swapped out individually. In Pakistan's climate: the standout choice for humidity and wet areas, and it shrugs off heat and dust. Install time: fast — a standard room is usually done in a day, with no drying or painting wait. The trade-off is design flexibility: PVC suits flat and simple stepped ceilings, not the sculpted trays and curves gypsum can achieve.

Most homes use both: gypsum with cove lighting in the lounge and dining room, and PVC in the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms where moisture and budget matter more than ornamentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

PVC ceiling panels are faster to install, moisture-resistant and more budget-friendly — best for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Gypsum allows more elaborate designs (trays, cove lighting) and a fully smooth, paint-ready finish, so it is the usual choice for living rooms and formal spaces. Many homes use both: gypsum in the lounge, PVC in wet areas.

Plain gypsum false ceiling is around PKR 85–130 per sqft, and gypsum with cove/LED detailing around PKR 130–200 per sqft, based on our live ceiling price page. Installation labour is typically PKR 30–60 per sqft. WhatsApp us your room size for an exact figure.

PVC ceiling panels are around PKR 65–120 per sqft for material, plus roughly PKR 30–60 per sqft for installation, depending on the panel and ceiling height. PVC is the most budget-friendly false-ceiling option.

Yes — PVC ceiling panels are moisture-resistant and do not sag or stain from humidity, which makes them ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and covered outdoor areas. Gypsum, being a plaster-based board, can be damaged by leaks or standing damp.

PVC ceilings clip up quickly — a standard room is usually done in a day. Gypsum takes longer because of framing, boarding, jointing and finishing, especially for tray and cove designs. If speed and low mess matter, PVC wins; if you want an elaborate designer ceiling, gypsum is worth the extra time.
